Introduction
Induction of labour (IOL) is the process of artificially stimulating the uterus to begin labour. Cervical ripening (the process of softening, effacing and dilating the cervix) is often required prior to IOL. IOL is recommended when the maternal and/or fetal risks of ongoing pregnancy outweigh the risks of IOL and birth. The purpose of this guideline is to guide the IOL process for women at or near term. Refer to associated Queensland Clinical Guidelines for specific circumstances outside the scope of this guideline including:
• Early pregnancy loss
• Termination of pregnancy
• Perinatal care of the extremely preterm baby
• Preterm prelabour rupture of membranes
• Term prelabour rupture of membranes
• Stillbirth care
• Vaginal birth after caesarean
